Discord server and profile graphics
Discord gates animation behind boost levels and Nitro, and most people only find out after they have paid for a GIF that will not upload. Here is which slot needs what.

Discord in detail
Discord has five separate image slots a community actually uses, and they live in three different settings screens. The server banner and server icon are under Server Settings, Overview. The invite splash is under Server Settings, Invites, and is the background a stranger sees before they accept. Your own profile banner and avatar are under User Settings, Profiles, and have nothing to do with the server at all.
The animation rules are not symmetrical. An animated server icon unlocks at boost Level 1, along with the invite splash background. The server banner slot itself does not appear until Level 2. An animated profile banner or avatar needs Nitro on your account, not boosts on the server. If you have none of that, every pack still gives you a still PNG for each slot, cut from the same frame as the animation, so the branding matches whether or not anyone is boosting.
File size is the other wall people hit. Discord rejects an image over 10MB, and in practice a long, high-colour GIF blows past that fast. The animated Discord files in a pack are capped well under the limit by frame count and palette rather than by crushing quality, so a 960x540 banner lands around 7MB at 16fps with a 160-colour palette and still looks like it was rendered, not compressed.
One layout note that costs people a lot of re-uploads: Discord crops avatars to a circle and crops the server icon to a circle too. Anything in a corner is gone. The 300x300 avatar and 512x512 icon in every pack centre the mark and keep a safe margin, so the crop takes background and nothing else.

- Discord server banner, 960x540The server banner slot does not exist until boost Level 2, which is why half the people who buy one cannot upload it.
- Discord server icon, 512x512Discord shows your server icon at 48 pixels in the sidebar. Everything you put in the corners is cropped off by the circle anyway.
- Discord profile banner, 680x240Your profile banner is not your server's banner. It is 680x240, it lives in User Settings, and animating it needs Nitro rather than boosts.
- Discord profile picture, 300x300Discord renders your avatar at 40 pixels next to a message. Design for 40 and scale up; do not design for 300 and hope.
- Discord invite splash, 1920x1080This is the only Discord graphic a non-member sees, and it is the last thing between an invite link and a join.

Discord questions
What boost level do I need for an animated Discord server banner?
The server banner slot appears at boost Level 2. An animated server icon and the invite splash unlock earlier, at Level 1. A still banner can be used at any level once the slot is available.
Why will my GIF not upload to Discord?
Almost always file size. Discord caps images at 10MB. Long loops with a full colour palette pass that easily, which is why the animated files in a pack are built to a frame and palette budget rather than exported at maximum quality.
Do I need Nitro for an animated profile banner?
Yes. The animated personal profile banner and animated avatar are Nitro features on your own account. Server boosts do not unlock them.
What size should a Discord server banner be?
960x540 is the size Discord stores and the one every pack renders. Discord displays it smaller and crops the top and bottom on narrow windows, so the lockup sits in the middle band.
