Forum signatures
A signature is read while somebody is reading a post. One second of attention, and most of it goes to the server name.
Forum signature at its real ratio. Hover to animate. Previews are watermarked.

About forum signatures
650x250 is the usual ceiling on gaming and roleplay boards, and it is generous compared to everything else in this catalogue. That generosity is the trap: a signature is never the thing somebody opened the page to look at, so filling it with rules, links, member counts and a staff list wastes the space rather than using it.
What belongs in one is the server name large enough to read at a glance, one short tagline, and the invite. The extra height means the backdrop reads as a scene rather than a texture, which is why signatures tend to be the best-looking format in a pack, but the lockup is still doing the work.
The constraint boards actually enforce is file size, not dimensions. Older vBulletin installs commonly cap signature images between 500KB and 1MB, and the upload fails silently when you cross it. The animated signature here is built at 18fps over 3.6 seconds with a 192-colour palette and comes in under 6MB, which suits modern XenForo and Invision boards; if yours is stricter, the still is a few hundred kilobytes and loses only the motion. Boards that strip animation entirely will show the first frame, which is composed to stand on its own for that reason.

Questions
What size should a forum signature be?
650x250 is the common ceiling on XenForo and Invision boards. Older vBulletin installs often cap width at 500 pixels, so check the board rules before uploading.
Why did my signature upload fail?
Usually the board's file size limit, which is often between 500KB and 1MB and fails without a clear error. Use the still PNG if your board is strict.
Will the animation work on every forum?
Most modern boards allow animated GIFs in signatures. Boards that strip animation show the first frame, which is why the first frame is composed as a finished image.
