YouTube crops channel art four different ways depending on the device. Only the middle 1546x423 survives all four, and almost every server banner puts its name outside it.
YouTube formats
Channel art has to be uploaded at 2560x1440 and then survives as four different crops. Television shows the whole 2560x1440. Desktop shows roughly 2560x423. Tablet shows less. A phone shows only the centre 1546x423. That last rectangle is the only part guaranteed to be visible to everyone, and it is where the wordmark and the invite have to sit.
Every pack renders the full 2560x1440 and also exports a separate 1546x423 crop of the same frame, so you can see at a glance what a phone will show before you upload. That export is not a resize of the banner, it is the safe area cut out of the full-resolution render.
Thumbnails are a different job. At 1280x720 under 2MB, a thumbnail competes in a grid against other thumbnails, so it needs one readable word and strong contrast rather than a full scene. The 1280x720 export in a pack is built as a base plate: your server name large, the scene behind it, and clear space at the bottom right where YouTube stamps the duration. Add your own episode text on top and the set stays consistent across a whole series.
Neither YouTube slot animates. Channel art and thumbnails are both still-only, which is why these two formats ship as stills at full resolution rather than as GIFs nobody can use.
