Cel-shaded skies, hard-edged light, saturated gradients. The look most roleplay servers aimed at a younger audience ask for.
Anime plates trade depth for legibility, and at small sizes that trade pays. Hard-edged shapes and high-chroma gradients survive a 468x60 crop and a 300x300 downscale far better than a photographic scene does, because there is no fine detail to lose.
They are also the most distinctive in a server browser full of dark photographic strips. That is the point and the risk: a server that goes anime is making a claim about its audience, and the branding will read as that claim whether or not the roleplay matches it.
The one technical note: cel shading produces large flat areas and hard edges, which is the worst case for GIF dithering. The animated exports use a tighter palette and gentler dither for anime plates to stop banding appearing across the sky.
